Daily routines at schiev festival

Watching a sunrise with Stellar OM Source, having a nap with Jay Glass Dubs, cooking dinner with Mathilde Fernandez, or doing some cleaning with Q-Boy: that is neither the wet dream of every experimental-music-aficionado, nor the content of our yet-to-be-realized people-section. Rather, it is the line-up of this year’s edition of schiev festival that is happening online between November 9 and 15.

Already since 2015, Belgian festival schiev is presenting a wide range of “avant-garde pop music,” as they call it. Having an actual event with actual artists arriving from foreign countries in a city like Brussels and presenting their music to actual people, however, turned out to be a bad idea in 2020. Therefore, schiev that is part of Shape platform decided to go online.

“Not another stream!” we hear you say. And usually, we would agree. But then again, schiev is not just another platform shooting some mediocre content into the ether. The festival team has managed to commission specific pieces of work, all of them related to this year’s theme of daily routines.

There are different aspects about the festival’s theme in relation to its form that are appealing to us: for sure, the exclusiveness of the content is one such aspect. Also the fact that the pieces are broadcasted during specific times of the day that fit the respective situation is a nice twist to the streaming format. However, the most interesting bit is the theme itself: as the pandemic made most of our worlds scale down to one’s own room and one’s own activities within that room, daily routines have definitely gained more attention over the past couple of months. Having artists accompanying those mundane tasks with specific pieces of work seems to be an interesting approach that feels just right for this extraordinary year. At least, it is nice to see a festival taking up the challenges that come along with the pandemic and actually dealing with the situation in a joyful way.

So, be prepared to…
… watch a sunrise with Stellar OM Source to kick off the week (Monday, November 9, 07:00 CET);
… or to do some grocery shopping with Fausto Mercier later that day (Monday, November 9, 18:00 CET);
…or to have a nap with Jay Glass Dubs [see zweikommasieben #17] on Wednesday (November 11, 13:30 CET);
…or to commute to work with Rian Treanor the day after (Thursday, November 12, 09:00 CET);
…or, towards the end of the workweek, to get a job done just in time with object blue (Friday, November 13, 11:00 CET);
…or to workout with Soumaya Phéline to start into the weekend (Saturday, November 14, 11:00 CET)
…or to round off the week (and the festival) with a walk with Radio Hito on Sunday afternoon (November 15,16:00 CET).
