Premiere: Magda Drozd’s “Lovers”

Magda Drozd, who has had two successful album releases on Präsens Editionen — Songs for Plants in 2019 and 18 Floors in 2021 — returns with a new EP titled Viscera. Set to be released on the 28th of April, it will again be released through the publishing mothership of zweikommasieben. We’re thrilled to share the new video for one of the tracks on the EP: “Lovers”.

“Lovers” was composed during the warm summer months in Turin, Italy. Drozd drew inspiration from the baroque architecture of Piedmont and the mystical landscapes around the Po River. The lyrics for the song were written by Drozd’s partner, Zürich-based artist, and musician Nicola Genovese. With powerful drums, a choir accompanied by a gentle vocal performance, and rhythmic violin loops that eventually dissolve into a dramatic melody, the song leads us into a dreamy yet captivating world.

The accompanied visuals for „Lovers” were directed by Paris-based artist Léa Jullien in collaboration with Magda Drozd. The dreary landscape in the video echoes the melancholic and dystopic atmosphere emerging from the composition and Drozd’s singing . However, Jullien’s work still finds solitude not in a romanticization of a cultivated beech and spruce forest as a utopic place to escape  stressful city life with the promise to come closer to an imaginary inner self but in the metaphoric value of the close–up and in the beauty of abstract forms arising from a sensitivity to the minutiae.
