Disposable Camera — AUN & Ensemble Economique

Since 2005 the German label Denovali Records has provided a home for acts that occupy the dimly-lit spaces between dark ambient, drone and modern classic: Thomas Köner, worriedaboutsatan, Petrels, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble or Greg Haines, for example.

One of the newer additions to the Denovali roster is the American Brian Pyle aka Ensemble Economique. Since 2008 Pyle has released numerous records on pioneering experimental music labels like Not Not Fun Records, Shelter Press, Digitalis Recordings and now, Denovali. To create his sound collages Pyle uses instruments such as piano or electric guitar, incorporates film samples or his own voice, and modifies all of these elements with different effects pedals.

No less prolific are Pyle’s Denovali colleagues AUN. The artists behind this project, whose wonderful live and recorded soundscapes nod to psychedelic, shoegaze and doom, are Montreal’s Julie Leblanc and Martin Dumais.

Both acts presented their live sets at Klub Kegelbahn in Lucerne on May 12th, 2014. Their impressive performances succeeded in enrapturing the large audience. Before and after both sets, the three musicians recorded the event with a disposable camera for this same-named column.
