INIT’s “Music for Dinners” Mix

INIT is the musical project of Nadia D’Alò and Benedikt Frey, a duo based in Berlin. Back in November 2020, they released their new album Gravity via Barcelona-based imprint Hivern Discs. For zweikommasieben, the two artists compiled a mix intended to soundtrack one activity that, at least for some of us, substituted going out during the current pandemic: dinner parties.

On the one hand, Nadia D’Alò and Benedikt Frey continued their musical path in a left-field mixture of house, electro, and post-punk with Gravity. On the other hand, the duo’s most recent release also features music that is bit more playful and shows—as the label puts it—“a greater presence popular music,” compared to older INIT releases.

These changes could open up other contexts for D’Alò and Frey’s music. And in composing for film, D’Alò and Frey found already another context for their shared vision in sound. Nevertheless, it is hard to deny that one of the suitable ways to appreciate INIT’s music would be in a bar or a club, equipped with a powerful sound system and filled with people. Like many other electronic music albums and EPs, Gravity was released in time when these suitable contexts are not available.

As a magazine, zweikommasieben can neither offer another film project for D’Alò and Frey, nor—as everybody else—can we throw a party due to Covid-restrictions. The adequate context for INIT therefore remains absent. Instead of searching for a replacement, however, we flipped the situation on its head. We asked the two artists to compile a mix for one context that seems to be rather prominent in the current pandemic situation: dinner parties. While opinions on these parties vary, their sheer quantitative increase in light of closed bars and clubs cannot be ignored (and one or the other might even have another dinner party scheduled already).

We are more than happy that the duo was up for the task. Below you can find a little statement of D’Alò and Frey in addition to the mix. The track list, however, remains a secret. Rather than digging for tunes, we recommend to focus on your dinner party: conversation topics, choice of drinks, and meal preparation!

We kindly invite you to our mix “Music for Dinners,” featuring records from our private collection. Perfect for a dinner with friends, from the elated aperitif up to the comfortable desert on the couch. To better times!
