Exclusive Mix: Ipek Gorgun

Last November, Ipek Gorgun and David Psutka aka Ceramic TL released Perfect Lung. The collaborative album marked a late highlight of 2017—and we reached out and asked the two for a contribution to the upcoming issue of zweikommasieben. As Gorgun already handed in an exclusive mix, we’re excited to present it as a teaser.

Canadian producer David Psutka has been known for the work under his Egyptrixx alias—thanks to EPs like The Only Way Up back in 2010 or the more recent albums on Halocline Trance—and Ceramic TL represented a further step into more abstract territories. The name Ipek Gorgun on the other hand is probably not as familiar. However, Gorgun’s wide spread interests in various fields might make her work more known to people in other disciplines of the arts. According to the press release of her debut album Aphelion released in 2016, she is enrolled in a PHD program in sonic arts at Istanbul technical university, has been participating in various band projects, did soundtracks for documentaries and practices photography as well as poetry. On Perfect Lung, she added layers of abstract soundscapes to Psutka’s crystal-clear synth plucks.

The mix Gorgun recorded for zweikommasieben shows that beside her multiverse of projects, she also managed to accumulate a wide ranging knowledge of experimental music. The mix starts in an almost collage-like manner and moves into calmer territories by its second half, all while the Turkish composer combines four decades of ambient, noise and free jazz. Within the 50 minutes, Gorgun presents classics by Charlemagne Palestine or Laurie Anderson, evergreens by Matana Roberts or Kevin Drumm and new material by Kareem Lofty or Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement. Enjoy—tracklist below!
